Smith Adds Second Event for Rio

Minnesota's Kierra Smith qualified for her second individual event for this summer's Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, after winning gold in the 200-meter breaststroke at the 2016 Canadian Olympic Trials. Smith unleashed this year's sixth-fastest time in the world with a 2:23.91.
Smith qualified for Canada's Olympic Team on Thursday after taking the gold in the 100-meter breast with a 1:06.93, which broke the Minnesota long course school record.
Gophers and Canada-natives Breanne Siwicki and Lauren Lalumiere closed out their Canadian Trials, as well. Siwicki competed in two events on Friday, and placed 21st in the 200-meter fly (2:19.74) and 33rd in the 800-meter free (9:16.00). Lalumiere finished 35th in the 200-meter fly (2:22.19).
Samantha Harding represented Canada at the 2016 Open Water National Championships on Friday. Harding finished 22nd overall in the 10-kilometer event, and third amongst Canadian competitors with a time of 2:07:10.55. Minnesota's Logan Redondo also competed, finishing 19th in the men's 10k race with a 1:56:24.69. Like Smith, Redondo took the 2015-16 collegiate season off, and will return for his senior season this fall.
