NCAA Release
Gymastics' Lindsay Mable and basketball's Rachel Banham are the University of Minnesota's nominees for NCAA Woman of the Year. The four pillars of the award are academics, athletics, service and leadership.
In 2016 Mable received the AAI Award as the nation's most outstanding senior gymnast. The Aurora, Colo., native was named Big Ten Gymnast of the Year in back-to-back seasons and led the Golden Gophers to a Big Ten regular-season title and team appearance at the NCAA Championships. Mable collected All-America honors in the All-Around and on each apparatus during her senior campaign.
Mable, who graduated with a degree in elementary education, earned the Wayne Duke Postgraduate Award. She was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team and earned Big Ten Distinguished Scholar accolades in all three years she was eligible for them. Mable's community involvement included student teaching and volunteering through the athletic department's M.A.G.I.C. program at places such as Feed My Starving Children.
An ACL injury forced Banham to support her team from the bench for most of 2014-15, but she overcame that obstacle to turn in one of the best individual seasons in Minnesota history. She was a top-five finalist for the John R. Wooden Award, the Big Ten Player of the Year and a first-team All-American in 2016. Banham, from Lakeville, Minn., ranked second in the NCAA with a scoring average of 28.6 points per game, and set a Big Ten record with a 30.5-point-per-game average in conference play. Banham tied the NCAA record with 60 points in a game and left the University of Minnesota with most of the program's scoring and 3-point records.
Banham graduated last year with a degree in sociology of law, crime and deviance. Her community involvement included assisting via the M.A.G.I.C. program at events like Hope Day and Women Run the Cities.
The NCAA Woman of the Year Award program was established in 1991. Mable and Banham are two of 231 Division I nominees for this year's award.
