MINNEAPOLIS (GopherSports.com) – Gopher Hockey All-American alum Alex Goligoski has signed a five-year deal with the Arizona Coyotes reportedly worth more than $27 million.
"I am very happy to join the Coyotes," Goligoski said. "Arizona is a great place to live and play and I'm excited to join an up-and-coming team that has a ton of talent and a very bright future."
Goligoski’s last three seasons have been among his most productive campaigns in a 10-year NHL career including a career-best 42 points in 2013-14. The defenseman’s 37 points (five goals, 32 assists) during the 2015-16 regular season are tied for second most in his career (2009-10).
In 10 NHL seasons, the Grand Rapids, Minn., native has played in 562 regular-season NHL games with 277 career points (55 goals, 222 assists). The defenseman has also played in 34 Stanley Cup playoff games with 21 points (seven goals, 14 assists). Goligoski is one of 10 Gopher Hockey alums on the Stanley Cup after winning with Pittsburgh in 2009.
"We are thrilled to sign Alex to a long-term contract," Arizona general manager John Chayka said. "Alex is a great skater and a smart, efficient defenseman who moves the puck well and makes his teammates better. He will help solidify our defense and support the growth of our young players. He will be a great addition to our team and we welcome him and his wife Amanda to the pack."
As a Gopher, Goligoski earned All-WCHA distinction in each of his three years with the program (All-Rookie in 2004-05, Second Team in 2005-06, First Team in 2006-07). In 118 career games with the Maroon & Gold, he totaled 98 points (25 goals, 73 assists).
An alternate captain, Goligoski was named a First Team All-American in his final year with the Maroon & Gold after helping the team sweep the WCHA regular-season (MacNaughton Cup) and playoff (Broadmoor Trophy) titles in 2006-07.
