MINNEAPOLIS - University of Minnesota men's gymnasts Joel Gagnon, Justin Karstadt, Tristan Duran and alum Ellis Mannon competed at the Canadian National and the P&G Championships this weekend coming away with outstanding results for the Maroon and Gold.
Karstadt finished second overall in the All-Around, first overall on Pommel Horse and third on Vault.
Two-time Gopher captain Joel Gagnon had a solid showing as well in Edmonton, as he qualified for the event finals on three of the four events he competed on (FX, V, & HB).
"A few rough spots in Joel's routines kept him from the medals podium, but alongside his teammate Karstadt, these two were incredible representatives of the University of Minnesota at the international level," said head coach Mike Burns.
Mannon finished third overall on Pommel Horse at the P&G Championships after tallying a 15.200 and a 15.150.
"Tristan did an awesome job representing Minnesota in the biggest meet of his career and I'm proud of all of these guys as they competed in their respective National Championships."
Gopher sophomore and 2016 Gopher Gymnastics Most Valuable Gymnast Duran, also competed at the P&G Championships, where he finished 26th in the All-Around, out-distancing some exceptional gymnasts in the process.
"To have our Gopher gymnasts competing at two National Championship meets on the same weekend certainly was a unique situation," said head coach Mike Burns. "I went to Edmonton with Joel and Justin, while Kostya Kolesnikov and Russ Fystrom went to Hartford with Tristan and alum Ellis Mannon. We came away from both meets with some outstanding results. Justin brought home the Gold Medal on Pommel Horse when he was crowned the Canadian National Champion and Ellis brought home the Bronze Medal on Pommel Horse from the U.S. Nationals with two days of outstanding performances on his signature event. It was great to see such successful results on one of the most difficult events in men's gymnastics."
