Laylin Named U.S. U-17 Head Coach

MINNEAPOLIS (GopherSports.com) – Gopher Hockey alum and current Hamline head coach Cory Laylin has been named the head coach of the 2016 U.S. Under-17 Select Team that will compete at the Under-17 Five Nations Tournament at the Dr Pepper StarCenter Arena, Aug. 9-13, in Frisco, Texas.
A native of St. Cloud, Minn., Laylin previously represented the U.S. as a player at the 1990 IIHF World Junior Championship in Finland and as an assistant coach on last year’s U.S. Under-17 Select Team that won the Under-17 Five Nations Tournament in Arosa, Switzerland – marking Team USA’s sixth championship in eight tries at the event (2015, 2013, 2012, 2011, 2010, 2008).
A member of Minnesota’s 100-Point Club, Laylin tallied 107 career points (58 goals, 49 assists) in 170 games. A four-year letter winner for the Maroon & Gold, the forward helped the Gophers reach the NCAA tournament in each of his four seasons including an NCAA championship game appearance in 1989. As a senior, he helped Minnesota capture the MacNaughton Cup as WCHA regular-season champions and was named the recipient of the program’s Dr. V. George Nagobads Unsung Hero Award.
In two seasons at Hamline, Laylin has the Pipers to the program’s second and third NCAA Division III tournament appearances while the team captured the MIAC title in his first year as head coach.
