Former Gophers gymnast, MaryAnne (Kelley) Elzen, is set to be inducted into the "M" Club Hall of Fame this October. Prior to the 2002 season, only one female Gopher gymnast had ever been named the conference's Gymnast of the Year. That changed when Elzen earned the award that season, a year in which she won the NCAA Regional title on floor exercise and took fourth in the nation, while also placing fifth in the all-around at the national meet. Her contributions helped the Gophers to the program's best-ever finish at NCAAs that spring. Elzen was a three-time First Team All-Big Ten performer, as well as a three-time All-American, during her Gopher career. Catch up the standout alumna.
What have you been up to since graduating from Minnesota?
I married my husband, former Gopher Wrestler Owen Elzen in 2004. We have three children, Madelyn (10), Reese (8), and Cade (7). I worked as a dancer and acrobat at Sea World in San Diego for two years after college and coached gymnastics at Twin City Twisters from 2002-2008. I have been a stay-at-home mom for the last number of years and love being able to spend so much time with my children!
What does being inducted into the "M" Club Hall of Fame mean to you?
First of all, it's a tremendous honor to be included among a group of such phenomenal athletes! I feel so privileged to represent women's gymnastics in the M Club Hall of Fame. I will always love and cherish the years I was able to compete for the University of Minnesota.
How did your time as a student-athlete shape your character?
Competing as a student-athlete taught me how to be present "in the moment", and to enjoy every part of it. As a gymnast and Gopher athlete, I learned the importance of diligence, sacrifice, camaraderie, loyalty, and team work.
What's your favorite memory from your time at Minnesota?
My favorite memory from my time at Minnesota was competing with my team at the NCAA Championships in 2002. It was an honor to represent the University of Minnesota at such a special event!
What advice would you give current Golden Gopher gymnasts?
Enjoy where you are, when you are there! Four years as a student athlete go by unbelievably fast, your college career will be over before you know it. Support your teammates, respect your coaches, and give your time as a Gopher athlete all of your mind, body, and heart!
