Kierra Smith finished seventh in the Olympic 200-meter breaststroke on Thursday. She finished in 2:23.19. The Canadian, who earlier this week swam in the 100 breast prelims, advanced to the 200 final in her first trip to the Olympics.
Smith is the fourth current or former member of the Gopher women's swimming and diving program to compete in the Olympic Games. She is the third swimmer, and the second of those two to make a final.
As the only current Minnesota student-athlete in the Games, Smith will return to Minneapolis for her senior season this fall. She is an NCAA champion and four-time Big Ten champion.
Smith and Minnesota men's alum David Plummer will both likely compete in the 4x100-meter relay for their countries. Plummer earlier this week won a bronze medal in the 100-meter backstroke for the United States.
Smith and Plummer are two of seven Gophers competing in Rio this summer and among the dozens of Gopher Olympians to compete over the Games' history. Please help support the next Gopher Olympian by giving to our Olympic sports programs. Click here for more information or to give today.
