Simone Kolander and Julianna Gernes led Minnesota's offense. Kolander netted two, while Gernes earned her first goal of the season. The Gophers tallied 21 shots during the 90-minute match over Eastern Michigan's seven.
In the 11th minute of the match, Kolander's header put Minnesota on the scoreboard. Maddie Gaffney was credited the assist.
Kolander scored again in the 24th minute off an assist from Sydney Squires.
"This season we've been able to create a lot of opportunities," Kolander said. "It's something that gives us a lot of confidence. The encouragement from my teammates definitely helps me find the back of the net."
Julianna Gernes earned a goal in the 81st minute off a pass from rookie TJ McKendrick.
"J's goal was a long time coming," head coach Stefanie Golan said. "It was awesome to see, she's playing great."
Senior goalkeeper Tarah Hobbs earned three saves and another shutout.
"Every time out is a time to get better," Golan said.
Minnesota hits the road the next two weekends to wrap up the non-conference season. The Gophers will travel to Durham, N.C. this week to face Villanova on Friday, Sept. 2 and No. 2 Duke on Sunday, Sept. 4. The following weekend, Minnesota will face No. 3 Stanford and No. 13 Santa Clara.
