Gophers Draw with Penn State

The University of Minnesota women's soccer team tied with No. 16 Penn State in a 1-1 decision on Friday night at the Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium. The game marked the Big Ten Conference opener, and the first time the Gophers have tied this season. Minnesota's record moves to 6-2-1 on the season.
"Our team gave a great effort and played well," head coach Stefanie Golan said. "We will continue to grow."
Minnesota outshot the Nittany Lions 18 to 12 during the 110-minute battle. The Gophers had nine corner kick opportunities to Penn State's two. For Minnesota, Simone Kolander led with four shots, with two on goal.
A physical and evenly-matched game had both teams scoreless heading into halftime.
Penn State's Megan Schafer scored in the 59th minute of play to get the away team on the scoreboard first. Schafer was assisted by Marissa Sheva. The goal was given up on a counter against the run.
Less than two minutes later, Minnesota responded. Kolander was able to score on a header off a corner kick from sophomore April Bockin. It was the eighth goal of the season for Kolander, which currently leads the Big Ten.
"Tarah Hobbs had key saves that kept our momentum positive," Golan said.
Senior goalkeeper Hobbs made five saves in tonight's match, including four in the second half. Hobbs, Rashida Beal, Tori Burnett, Molly Fiedler each played the full 110 minutes.
Tonight's match broke the attendance record at the stadium with 1,758 fans.
Minnesota welcomes No. 19 Ohio State to the Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium this Sunday, Sept. 18. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. Tickets for the match are available at mygophersports.com.
