The No. 10 Golden Gophers recorded a shutout against No. 19 Ohio State on Sunday, Sept. 18 at the Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium. Minnesota's 3-0 win over the Buckeyes moved their record to 7-2-1 on the season, and 1-0-1 in Big Ten Conference play.
"It was huge to get this momentum in the opening weekend of Big Ten play," associate head coach Krystle Seidel said. "We played two opponents on the national scene and we were able to come away with results."
Co-captain Josee Stiever scored in the fourth minute of the game to get Minnesota on the scoreboard early. The goal marked Stiever's fourth of the season.
"Coming out of the locker room, we knew we needed to get on the board first," Stiever said. "Molly Fiedler played a great ball and I was in the right place to get us started."
The Gophers entered halftime with a 1-0 lead, with nine shots and five on goal to the Buckeyes three shots.
Ohio State opened the second half with several good looks, but Gophers goalkeeper Tarah Hobbs kept them scoreless.
Simone Kolander recorded her ninth goal of the season in the 71st minute of play off an assist from Julianna Gernes. Kolander currently leads the Big Ten Conference in goals.
In the 86th minute, junior Sydney Squires found the back of the net off a play by rookie Nikki Albrecht to move the Gophers' lead to 3-0.
The Gophers led the game against Ohio State in shots (17-10), shots on goal (8-5), and corner kicks (9-4). Hobbs was credited another shutout after she tallied five saves.
Minnesota will travel to Indiana this week to continue Big Ten play. The Gophers will face the Hoosiers on Friday, Sept. 23 and the Boilermakers on Sunday, Sept. 25.
