TOLEDO, OHIO--- The Gophers tied for sixth place at the Inverness Intercollegiate, shooting a 873 (+21). The team shot a 290 (+6) in the final day of competition. Minnesota finished ahead of six teams, including 47th-ranked St. Mary's (Calif.), and tied with 26th-ranked Virginia.
"Despite our slow starts, we learned a great deal about our team's ability to finish off rounds this week," coach John Carlson said. "Each guy dealt with adversity by making mature decisions around a demanding golf course. Inverness is one of the finest course in the United States, and to play where U.S. Open champions have played is truly an unforgettable experience. I am proud of our team for another strong performance leading into a long break."
Justin Doeden jumped into the team lead with a stellar final round. He carded a 2-under 69, sinking four birdies to two bogeys. The senior ended the tournament with a 54-hole score of 216 (+3) and finished tied for 20th. After his 11th place finish at the Gopher Invitational, Doeden has reached the top 20 in the first two tournaments this year. He has played under par in three of six fall rounds.
Rúnar Arnorsson matched Doeden's four birdies and tallied a 73 in the third round. Throughout the tournament, Arnorsson found success on par 5s. He finished with the fifth-best score when playing a par 5. Overall, the junior finished the tournament shooting a 218 (+5) and tied for 26th.
Freshman Thomas Longbella carded a 76 in his final round in Toledo. He finished right behind Arnorsson with a 219, placing 36th. In Longbella's first two collegiate tournaments, he has finished as a top-three scorer for the Gophers.
Riley Johnson carried the momentum from his steady second round into the final day of competition. He shot his second straight 72 and placed 36th. Alex Uloth rounded out the Gophers lineup with a 234 and placed 67th.
William Leaf shot his best round of the tournament as an individual. He carded a 74 and placed 62nd.
Auburn placed first with a score of 843 while Michigan's Nick Carlson won medalists honors with a 209.
