The No. 9 University of Minnesota women's soccer team defeated Purdue 2-0 on Sunday afternoon at Folk Field. The Gophers record improved to 9-2-1 (3-0-1) on the season, and earn their third-straight shutout in conference play.
"Two shutout performances on the road are tough to come by," head coach Stefanie Golan said. "This weekend was a team effort -- everyone stepped up."
Senior co-captain Josee Stiever and sophomore April Bockin recorded goals in the victory. Minnesota led the game in shots (16-11), shots on goal (10-1) and corner kicks (5-3).
The Gophers led possession during the first half, but were unable to capitalize, and entered halftime tied 0-0 against the Boilermakers.
Minnesota entered the second half with added intensity.
In the 61st minute, Stiever scored inside the six-yard box to get the Gophers on the scoreboard off an assist from Julianna Gernes and her own rebound. It was Stiever's fifth goal of the season.
15 minutes later, Bockin's shot went over the goalkeeper's head to find the back of the net. Simone Kolander was credited the assist. The goal was Bockin's seventh goal of the season and Kolander's fourth assist.
Hobbs tallied one save against Purdue in her shutout.
"We know that every Big Ten game is going to be tough and bring its own challenges," Stiever said. "We're celebrating this win today, but we will also be preparing for next weekend."
Minnesota will host Wisconsin this Saturday, Oct. 1 at the Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium. The team's six seniors will be recognized, along with alums from the program. Kickoff is slated for 5:30 p.m. CT. Tickets are available at mygophersports.com.
