MINNEAPOLIS - The Gopher women's swimming and diving team welcomes seven new student-athletes to the 2016-17 squad. This week GopherSports.com features Lindsey Horejsi, a native of Albert Lea, Minn.

Horejsi joins the Gophers after swimming for Albert Lea High School under coaches Jonathan Schmitz, Joey Clapp and Erik Johnson. During her high school career, she set many accolades, including breaking the national high school record in the 100-yard breaststroke. Horejsi also earned Athlete of the Year and All-State during her senior season.

Aside from her high school swimming team, Horejsi swam for the Mantas Swim Club under head coach Alex Lindstrom. She also competed at the 2016 Olympic Trials.

Gopher Sports: What are you most looking forward to about being a Gopher athlete?
Lindsey Horejsi: I'm really excited to be in consistent training for a long time and have the atmosphere that I'm in with people having the same goals. So that's awesome, and representing Minnesota, my home state.

GS: What do you hope to accomplish this season?
LH: I'm hoping that I can help out some relays even though I'm a freshman. I want to place on the podium, either at Big Tens or the NCs.

GS: What are you most looking forward to this season?
LH: Just to see how I grow as a swimmer and person. Then, athletically, becoming better. I'm just excited to see where everything goes from here.

GS: What was it like to notch the national record in the 100-yard breaststroke in high school?
LH: It was my goal to break the national record before leaving. I had one year to do it, and I wasn't sure if I could pull it off. You put all of the work into it and just let it be at the end of the season. You just have to trust in yourself and God.

GS: How did it feel to earn All-State honors?
LH: It's an amazing feeling to perform at the top of your ability. It was super awesome to be up on that podium and representing your school.

GS: How did it feel to earn Athlete of the Year at the All-State banquet?
LH: I was honored to be chosen by different coaches. It was just an extreme honor to represent Minnesota and know that other coaches see you as a dedicated athlete and a hard working swimmer.

GS: How does it feel to be joining former teammates, Danielle and Chantal Nack, here at the University of Minnesota?
LH: I always liked swimming with them, so it's fun. Danielle and I are in different groups, which is kind of a bummer, but we will be swimming at meets together. I swim with Chantal; we are both in the same group, so that's really exciting. It's really awesome how everyone cheers each other on during practice and gets the most out of the pool.
