Gophers Take 10th at Notre Dame Invite

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - All 12 Golden Gopher women's cross country runners recorded career-best 5K times as the University of Minnesota placed 10th at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational at Burke Golf Course Friday afternoon.
Madeline Strandemo (16:45.7), Bethany Hasz (17:01.3), and Megan Hasz (17:01.5) led the way for Minnesota with Strandemo earning a top-20 finish in 18th place. The Hasz twins finished just 0.2 seconds apart in 40th and 42nd.
Rounding out the Gophers' top five scoring runners were Patty O'Brien in 17:37.8 for 90th place and Abby Kargol in 17:43.0 for 97th place in a field of 23 teams and nearly 200 runners.
Minnesota finished 10th in the team standings among a stacked field featuring six nationally-ranked teams and six more teams receiving votes in this week's national poll. No. 1 Providence (117), No. 5 NC State (149), Eastern Michigan (159), No. 2 New Mexico (166), and Baylor (169) took the top five spots while the Gophers scored 285 points for 10th, finishing ahead of Big Ten foes Purdue (319) and Nebraska (663).
Gophers Tamara Gorman (17:45.1), Emily Betz (17:49.3), Bailey Ness (17:56.5), and Courtney Alama (18:07.6) all ran cross country 5K career-bests in the Women's Blue Division 5K as well.
Four Gophers raced in the open race led by Elyse Prescott's runner-up showing. Prescott cut 40 seconds off her high school cross country 5K best (18:14.90) finishing second in 17:34.4. Gophers Tess Wasowicz (17:53.9) and Molly Eastman (18:06.1) also ran career-best times to place 11th and 13th, respectively.
Minnesota also had a group racing at the UW-Eau Claire Blugold Invitational Friday afternoon where Ellen Snyder paced a field of 210 finishers, winning the individual 6K crown in 22:34.3 and leading the Gophers to the team title with 16 points.
Following this week's competitions, the Gophers have a week off in preparation for the Wisconsin Invitational on Friday, Oct. 14 and the Tori Neubauer Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 15.
