Gophers Pick Up Two Wins

Minneapolis, Minn. - The University of Minnesota picked up their first two wins of the spring season by topping Northern Illinois University 7-0 and South Dakota State 7-0 Saturday at Baseline.
Annemarie Emme and Mehvish Safdar began the match by defeating Evelyn Youel and Brodie Walker 6-2 at No. 2 doubles, followed by No. 1 doubles Caroline Ryba and Cammy Frei dropping their match to Adey Osabuohien and Raven Neely 6-4.
Caitlyn Merzbacher and Tina Kreinis clinched the doubles point at No. 3, taking down Pauline Chawafambira and Abbey Dekkinga with a close 7-5 match.
Safdar took the first victory during singles play quickly, defeating Youel 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 6 spot. Following suit, Emme grabbed the Gophers a point at the No. 4 spot, winning 6-1, 6-2 over NIU's Dekkinga.
Securing the win for Minnesota at spot No. 5, Camila Vargas Gomez topped Walker, 6-4, 6-2. Immediately following Vargas Gomez's victory, Kreinis avoided a third set, defeating Neely 6-2, 7-5.
Fighting back after a loss in her first set, Barabara Mancera picked up another point for the Gophers, winning the battle over Chawafambira, 2-6, 6-0, 6-4.
Finishing up the last match of the morning, Ryba won by forfeit and did not finish her second set against Osabouhien at the No. 1 spot.
In the second match of the day, the Gophers started off with a sweep in the doubles matches. Emme and Safdar picked up the first victory 6-0 over Maria Laura Velazco and Isabella Chela. The doubles point was clinched when Ryba and Frei defeated Iasmin Rosa and Morgan Brower 6-2 in the No. 1 spot.
Kreinis and Merzbacher completed the sweep by taking down Molly Crum and Elif Gabb 6-3.
The Maroon and Gold made quick work in the singles matches, Safdar started it off with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Velazco from the No. 2 spot.
Soon after, Vargas defeated Brower 6-0, 6-0 then Frei clinched the fourth point with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Gabb. Merzbacher added to the win total with a 6-0, 6-0 victory in the No. 5 spot.
In her first singles dual match of the 2017 season, Maja Vujic defeated Crum 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 4 spot. Kreinis battled back in her first set to win 7-5 then took the second set 6-2 at the No. 1 spot.
The Gophers will travel to Huntington, W. Va. January 28 as they take on Marshall.
