Gophers Get Big Win Over Ohio State

Abernathy scored a career high of 9.925 on vault to be named event champion. Abby DeMuse followed with a 9.875 to tie for third, a personal record. Freshman Paige Williams posted a 9.850 for fifth.
Bailie Holst led the Gophers with a 9.925 to for first place. Hannah Hitchcock finished fifth with a career high score of 9.825. Gophers Ciara Gardner and Rachel Rowland tied for sixth with scores of 9.800, a personal best for Rowland.
Teammates Gardner and Kaitlin Rahon shared gold on beam as they each matched their personal records of 9.875. DeMuse also tied her career high as she tied for third with a 9.825.
Minnesota came up big on floor, claiming the top four spots. Abernathy earned another event title and personal record with a 9.925. Holst and Rahon each notched career best scores of 9.900 to tie for silver.
"We have great tumbling and fun routines," Hansen said. "No one routine is like another and I think that's really exciting for the crowd and shows the personality of our athletes."
Holst tied for first with Ohio State's Alexis Mattern in the all-around competition with a 39.375, a personal record for Holst. Gardner took home third with a 39.300.
Next Up
The Gophers will be back on the road next weekend as they head to Champaign, Ill. to face the Fighting Illini. The meet is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 4 at 4:00 p.m.
The University of Minnesota upset No. 20 Ohio State 196.800 to 196.450 on Saturday evening at the Sports Pavilion. The Gophers' team score was a season high by nearly two points.
"This is huge for our team," head coach Jenny Hansen said. "They came out confident and did what they do in practice every day. It's so fun to see us continue to grow, and I think the best is still ahead of us."
By event, the team scored a 49.225 on vault, 49.075 on uneven bars, 49.050 on beam and 49.450 on floor. Minnesota tallied 12 personal records on the evening, and had five scores earn a 9.900 or higher.
