Preview: Gophers Travel to Iowa for Big Ten Matchup

MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota swim and dive will head south to Iowa City, Iowa for their first Big Ten dual meet of the season on Friday, Oct. 27. The Golden Gophers will take on the Hawkeyes in a rivalry matchup that began back in 1920. Between the men's and women's squad the Gophers hold an all-time record of 52-40 over Iowa.

"Our teams have really come around. Our women have been one of the top teams in the Big Ten for a number of years. And our men are really coming into it too," head coach Kelly Kremer said. "Iowa is just one of those teams that they're close to us and they're a team we see every year and they're a team we're familiar with."

Men' Preview
Minnesota is coming off a tough loss to Florida St. by a score of 179-121. In series matchup against Iowa, Minnesota has won nine of the last 10 meetings between both teams. Last season at home the Gophers edged their way past the Hawkeyes, 185-113.5

In the Gophers last meet at FSU, senior captain Conner McHugh and junior Nick Plachinski both posted a pair of first place finishes individually. They both combined to give the Gophers 36 points and captured the only first place finishes by Minnesota.

About Iowa
Iowa's Men last time out hosted Michigan State in a Big Ten matchup. The Hawkeyes were able to swim their way past MSU by a score of 195-100. In the victory, Iowa posted six victories Iowa's Joe Myhre was tabbed as the Big Ten Swimmer of the Week back on October 11, while Anton Hoherz received Big Ten Diver and Freshman of the Week.

Women' Preview
Minnesota will enter this weekend's match as the No. 17 team in nation, as a result of the latest TY/CSCAA national polls. The Gophers are coming off a win against Florida State which came down to the final event in the 200 free relay. Minnesota has not dropped a meet against the Hawkeyes in over a decade with their most recent win coming last season at home, 186-114.

In the Gophers last meet at FSU, junior Zoe Avestruz and freshman Mackenzie Paddington both posted a pair of first place finishes. The duo combined to give the Gophers 36 team points individually. With the impressive performance Padington was selected as the Big Ten Swimmer and Freshman of the Week. Padington also moved her way into the Minnesota record books posting top 20 all-time finishes in the 200 free and

About Iowa
Iowa's women last time out hosted Michigan State and Northern Iowa. They Hawkeyes completed a sweep with a Big Ten win over MSU (198-108) and a non-conference victory over UNI (184-113). Freshman Hannah Burvill shined for the Hawkeyes winning in the 200 free, 100 free, 500 free and placed first as part of the 400-free relay squad.

ON DECK
After being away from home to start the season, Minnesota will return to Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center for one of the most anticipated meets of the season. The Gophers will host Michigan, Wisconsin and Penn State on November 3 at 6 p.m. and November 4 beginning at noon. Friday, Nov. 3 will also be the Gophers annual Pack the Pool night, as well as senior night. Admission to the event will be $5 each day.
