Schammel Earns WCHA Weekly Award

MINNEAPOLIS -- University of Minnesota redshirt junior Nicole Schammel has been selected as this week's WCHA Offensive Player of the Week, Powered by GoodWood Hockey, after she scored three goals to lead the Gophers to a conference sweep over St. Cloud State last week.
Schammel led Minnesota to 3-0 and 4-3 wins over the Huskies at home at Ridder Arena last weekend. For the series, Schammel had three goals, seven shots on goal, two blocked shots, and a +1 rating. Her three goals included one game-winner (game two) and one power-play goal.
Schammel's three goals led all WCHA players, and her three points were tied for the lead among all WCHA skaters for the weekend.
The Red Wing, Minn., native scored Minnesota's second goal in the team's game-one 3-0 win. She then had a two-goal game in the team's 4-3 win to seal the series sweep. Schammel put the Gophers up 3-0 midway through the third period and then added the eventual game-winner on the power play to make it 4-1 with just over five minutes remaining before the Huskies scored two late goals.
Schammel's three-goal series tied her career best. She is currently has eight points (6g-2a) during a team-best seven-game point streak.
This is Schammel's first WCHA weekly award of the 2017-18 season and her second career honor as she also earned a WCHA Rookie of the Week nod while with Minnesota State in the 2014-15 season.
