Gophers Defeat UMass at Big Green Invite

HANOVER, NH - The Minnesota Gopher women's tennis team won seven out of eight singles matches, and three out of four doubles matches Friday to defeat UMass at the Big Green Invitational.
In the first singles spot, Caroline Ryba fell to Ana Yrazusta 6-4, 6-2, while Tina Kreinis defeated Ruth Crawford 1-6, 6-4, 6-4, in the second spot.
Annemarie Emme won 6-1, 6-1 against Janja Kovacevic in the third spot, followed by a 6-1, 6-4 win from freshman River Hart over Laura Moreno in the fourth spot.
Caitlyn Merzbacher won a heated match in the fifth spot, a 6-1, 7-6(1) win over Martina Bocchi.
Camila Vargas Gomez and Mehvish Safdar swept their opponents for the sixth and eighth spots respectively, while Cammy Frei defeated Jovana Bogicevic 6-1, 6-2 for the seventh spot.
Doubles play was more of the same for Minnesota, with the Gophers pairings taking three out of four matches against the Minutemen.
Safdar and Merzbacher fell in the first spot 6-3 to Yrazusta and Moreno, followed by a close 6-4 win by Kreinis and Emme over Crawford and Ashley Avery in the second spot.
In the third spot, Ryba and Vargas Gomez won 6-3 over Kovacevic and Bocchi, followed by the clinching win in the fourth spot by Hart and Frei, a 6-2 win over Bogicevic and Meghan Bernard.
Minnesota will continue the Big Green Invitational Saturday against Dartmouth.
