Gophers Kick Off Day One at Vanderbilt

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - As part of its three-meet weekend, Minnesota has a number of Gophers competing at the Music City Challenge this weekend. Friday's action saw the Gophers compete in the 200m, high jump, weight throw, and triple jump as action continues Saturday at Vanderbilt's Student Rec Center.
Emerald Egwim ran a career-best 24.37 to move into eighth in Minnesota history in the 200m. Egwim led the Gophers with a fifth-place showing overall, winning her heat in a head-to-head match-up with fellow Gophers Emma Spagnola (24.58), who tied for ninth overall, and Erin Hawkins (24.87), who took 18th. Bolade Jinadu finished second in her heat in a career-best 24.84 seconds, and Kat Keller ran 25.52.
Heta Tuuri cleared a season-best 1.79m (5-10.50) to finish as high jump runner-up. Tuuri cleared the first four consecutive heights on her first attempt before making 1.79m on her third try. Taylor Wiebke tied for third place, clearing 1.72m (5-07.75).
Nina Horvath led Minnesota in the weight throw with a toss of 19.01m (62-04.50), her second-best mark of the season and second-straight meet throwing over 19 meters. Horvath placed 11th in a stacked field of 41 throwers. Fellow Gophers Angie Guenther (18.06m, 59-03.00), Temi Ogunrinde (18.02m, 59-01.50), and Agnes Esser (17.75m, 58-03.00) finished 15th, 16th, and 17th, respectively.
Triple jump saw Shanique Wright record a mark of 12.29m (40-04.00) to finish 11th.
The Gophers are competing at the ISU Classic in Ames, Iowa and the UST Showcase hosted by the University of St. Thomas in addition to the two-day Music City Challenge this weekend. Action continues at Vanderbilt at 10 a.m. CT Saturday.
