Gophers Win Seven Events at Home

MINNEAPOLIS - The Golden Gopher women's track & field team won seven event titles at the Parents Day Invite as the team hosted its final indoor meet of the 2017 on Saturday at the Minnesota Fieldhouse.

Agnes Esser and Kiley Sabin swept the throwing events for Minnesota. Esser won the weight throw with a career-best toss of 19.90m (65-3.50) to move into third among all-time Gophers while Sabin won her third shot put title of the season with a meet-record throw of 16.20m (53-01.75). Temi Ogunrinde also climbed up Minnesota's all-time ranks in the weight throw with a third-place PR throw of 19.34m (63-05.50) to rank eighth in program history.

Minnesota took home two more event crowns in the field events as Cami Gilson won the pole vault with her second-best mark of the season at 4.01m (13-01.75) and Taylor Wiebke won high jump with a meet-record mark of 1.75m, 5-08.75.

On the track, Haley Rasmussen won the 5,000-meter run to kick off the meet, clocking a first-place time of 18:36.54 while Bethany Hasz and Titania Markland also won their respective events while competing unattached. Hasz won the mile in a meet record 4:50.61 while Markland won the 600-meter run in 1:32.46.

In total, four Parents Day Invite meet records fell: mile (Hasz), distance medley relay (Minnesota Duluth, 11:44.37), high jump (Wiebke), shot put (Sabin).

Behind Hasz's win, the Gophers' attached and unattached runners combined to take the top eight spots and 14 of the top 16 spots in the mile. Samantha Prouty (4:58.72) and Abby Lange (4:59.25) led the attached Gophers in fourth and sixth, respectively.

Likewise, Minnesota's attached and unattached athletes combined for the top six finishes in the 600m. Anne Haakenstad led the attached runners with a PR of 1:37.05 for a fifth-place showing.

The Gophers picked up top-six finishes in the 3,000-meter run led by Courtney Alama in 10:19.73 as the runner-up. Megan Flanagan ran a career-best 10:31.27 in third, and Naomi Ollila finished sixth (10:43.88).

Behind Sabin's win in the shot put, the Gophers collected the top-four finishes. Shay Nielsen was runner-up with a career-best throw of 15.33m (50-03.50) while Natalie Manders also posted a PR of 13.10m (42-11.75), and Allie Heifort was fourth (12.94m, 42-05.).

Next weekend, the Gophers travel to the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio, for the 2017 Big Ten Indoor Track & Field Championships. Action gets underway on Friday, Feb. 24 and wraps up Saturday, Feb. 25.
