Gophers Drop Meet to Huskers

The University of Minnesota women's gymnastics team fell to the University of Nebraska with a final score of 196.550-194.900 on Saturday afternoon at the Sports Pavilion. The Gophers move to 5-3 on the season, and 3-2 in conference competition.
"There were highs and lows for the team," head coach Jenny Hansen said. "Bars was really great, I'm really proud of the team for working hard this week and it paid off."
By event, Minnesota scored a 48.550 on vault, 49.050 on uneven bars, 48.125 on beam and 49.175 on floor.
Juniors Ciara Gardner and Abby DeMuse tied for fifth place on vault with scores of 9.750. Bailey Abernathy recorded a 9.725 for eighth overall.
For the second-straight meet, freshman Ivy Lu earned gold on uneven bars with a 9.875 along with two Huskers. Bailie Holst followed for fourth place with a 9.850. Gardner, Rachel Rowland and Hannah Hitchcock tied for eighth after each scored a 9.775.
Gardner tied her career high on beam with a 9.875 for second place. Fellow seniors Kaitlin Rahon and Holst were Minnesota's next top finishers. Rahon scored a 9.800 to tie for fifth, and Holst tallied a 9.725 for eighth place.
Gardner once again matched her personal record with a 9.900 on floor to be named event champion. DeMuse and Abernathy shared bronze with scores of 9.850. It was DeMuse's first appearance on floor this season after missing the start of the season due to injury.
Gardner earned silver in the all-around competition with a 39.300, matching her top score this season. Holst followed for third place with a 39.000.
"I definitely want to do a lot better next week," Gardner said. "Even if I do reach my personal best on an event, there are always areas I can work on to get to a higher level."
Next Up
Minnesota will travel to Denver, Colo. next weekend to face the Pioneers for the second time this season. The meet is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 18 with the first rotation at 7 p.m. Central.
"It will be great going to Colorado," Hansen said. "We have three women on our team from there. It's a great opportunity for us to well on the road against a strong team."
