MINNEAPOLIS - University of Minnesota director of women's track & field and cross country Matt Bingle checks in with GopherSports.com as the Gophers prepare to host the Parents Day Invite this week.
Gopher Sports: What's special about hosting the Parents Day Invite?
Matt Bingle: We're going to recognize our seniors, so we're looking forward to that. It's a special day for them and their families. It is the Parents Day meet, so all of the parents come in, we have food, and everyone enjoys being together. It's a good day for that kind of thing.
GS: What have this year's seniors done for the program?
MB: The seniors have seen the program grow quite a bit over the years, especially those who are in their fifth year. From where we were when they started, in the bottom three or four in the conference, to obviously winning the Big Ten last year and seeing the program develop into a top two or three program in the Big Ten these last couple years, they were a big part of that, which is a great thing for them. They've been on a great journey here. They've had a huge impact on the coaching staff and on their teammates. They definitely have left a legacy and told a great story about themselves; hopefully they have some great memories of their experience here.
GS: What groups will be competing this weekend?
MB: This weekend, the pole vaulters will all compete, and the throwers are going to throw. For the most part after that, a lot of our top group will be resting before Big Tens next week. The meet is a good chance for our redshirts and athletes who are developing to compete as well and finish their indoor season on high note.
