The Golden Gophers added two gold medals among their five on Friday night as they moved into third place at the Big Ten Championships. Yu Zhou won her second diving event of the meet in West Lafayette, Ind., and freshman Tevyn Waddell won the 100-yard backstroke for her first individual conference title. Minnesota's 753-point total trails only Michigan's 805.5 and Indiana's 791.
Zhou captured her third consecutive 3-meter Big Ten title with a personal-record score of 413.95. She has won on both springboards and Saturday will have a chance to replicate last year's feat of sweeping all three diving events.
Freshman Sarah Bacon won her first conference medal, finishing third with a score of 384.30 on the 3-meter diving board and helping the Gophers tally 100 points as a team in the event. Lexi Tenenbaum joined her teammates in the final and placed fourth at 378.95. She and Bacon both set personal records. Earlier in the afternoon, Mariam Khamis earned a 12th-place finish with 317.00 points.
Waddell's winning 52.09 in the 100 back beat Michigan's Clara Smiddy by .02 seconds. Teammate Zoe Avestruz placed fourth in the same heat in a personal-best 52.49.
Minnesota earlier piled up 95 points in the 100-yard breaststroke. Freshman Lindsey Horejsi clocked a personal-record 58.90 to take silver just ahead of Kierra Smith's 58.95. The pair was behind only Olympic medalist Lilly King of Indiana. Rachel Munson (1:00.65) placed seventh in the same heat. Rae Bullinger (1:01.85) and Kaela Marcus (1:01.65) placed 16th and 19th, respectively, after competing in the "B" and "C" finals.
Danielle Nack and Tevyn Waddell set personal records in the 100 butterfly as they finished sixth and seventh with personal-record times of 52.68 and 52.70, respectively. Kaia Grobe placed 21st in 54.00.
Breanne Siwicki finished eighth in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:12.87. Rina Krupsky (4:19.31) and Erin Emery (4:22.17) were 22nd and 24th.
Chantal Nack recorded a personal-best 1:46.36 to finish 10th in the 200 freestyle. Her time is the second-fastest by a Gopher this season.
Minnesota's 200 free relay of Horejsi, Grobe, Allison Schumacher and Abigail Raatz took seventh in 1:31.11. The Gophers had already qualified for the NCAA Championships with a 1:29.74 in a time trial on Friday.
