Gophers Secure Two Wins in a Two-Match Day

Minneapolis, Minn. ââ'¬" The Minnesota Golden Gophers grab two wins for two matches Sunday at Baseline Tennis Center against Memphis and South Dakota.

To start the morning, Mehvish Safdar and Caitlyn Merzbacher quickly defeat Anki Wind and Katherine Cao, not allowing Memphis to win any games, 6-0.

At spot No. 3, Annemarie Emme and Camila Vargas Gomez clinch the doubles point for Maroon and Gold, overpowering Memphis 6-3. Caroline Ryba and Cammy Frei had their match go unfinished, but held a 4-3 edge.

Emme opens up singles play downing Memphis' Gabrielle Paul in two sets, 6-2, 6-2, adding to the Gophers' advantage.

At spot No. 2, Tina Kreinis is unable to overcome Hanna Sohn, 6-3, 6-1, giving the Tigers' their first point of the morning.

Next, Mancera was downed in two sets after a hard fought second set, 6-3, 7-6 (6).
Safdar fights at No. 5, but she can't hold on and drops, 7-5, 7-6 (5), leaving Ryba as the last Gopher standing.

Ryba is able to defeat Anki Wind at spot No. 1, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, to clinch the victory for the Golden Gophers in their first match of the day.

The second match began with Ryba and Frei quickly outshining South Dakota's Anastasia Bondarenko and Yuliya Sidenko, 6-2.

Immediately, Emme and Vargas Gomez were able to down the Coyotes' Hannah Wich and Ellie Burns, 6-3, securing the doubles point. Safdar and Merzbacher continued playing, grabbing the last win in doubles play, 7-5.

In singles play, Frei quickly grabbed the first point, winning 6-1, 6-1, immediately followed by Maja Vujic keeping the ball rolling, 6-0, 6-0.

Merzbacher swept Anastasia Bondarenko at spot No. 5, 6-0, 6-0, to clinch the Golden Gophers' second victory for the day.

Kreinis, at spot No. 1, grabs her first win of the weekend, 6-1, 6-2, over South Dakota's Ellie Burns.

Safdar finished 6-3, 0-5 ret, while Mancera secured a win, 6-1, 3-6 (8).
