Gophers Earn Bronze in Medley Relay

The Gophers earned a bronze medal and set a school record in the 400-yard medley relay on the second night of the Big Ten Men's Swimming and Diving Championships. Minnesota is in fifth place with 262 points through seven events in Columbus, Ohio. Indiana leads with 562.
Daryl Turner, Conner McHugh, Tuomas Pokkinen and Bowe Becker combined for a third-place time of 3:07.03, breaking Minnesota's record of 3:08.29 set in 2008. The time earned the Gophers their first Big Ten relay medal in four years and also beat the automatic qualifying standard for the NCAA Championships.
Becker now ranks third in Gophers history in the 50-yard freestyle. The sophomore finished fourth in 19.08 seconds, an NCAA automatic qualifying time. Paul Fair placed 15th in 19.90, and Pokkinen was 24th in 20.10, both NCAA provisional times.
Matt Barnard scored 338.80 points to place seventh in 1-meter diving. Alan LeBlang finished 15th, scoring 312.55 in the consolation final. Jeremy Moser also scored by finishing 24th at 278.70.
Jakub Maly, who already had a provisional NCAA time, placed eighth in the 200 individual medley in 1:45.05. He was .05 off his school record with a 1:44.58 in the prelims.
Logan Redondo placed 20th in the 500 freestyle in 4:23.46. Nick Plachinski (4:24.33) was close behind him in 21st. Both achieved NCAA "B" cuts.
The meet will resume with prelims Friday at 10 a.m. CT.
