GENEVA, Ohio (GopherSports.com) - Less than a week after running the third-fastest time in school history, Minnesota's distance medley relay team earned Second Team All-Big Ten honors with a runner-up performance at the 2016 Big Ten Indoor Track & Field Championships on Friday at the SPIRE Institute.
Through the first day of competition, the Gophers stand in seventh place with 14 points.
Minnesota's distance medley relay team of Shane Streich, Jackson Wellenstein, Mitch Hechsel and Derek Wiebke clocked a time of 9:38.03 to finish second to Indiana in a battle of the Big Ten's top-two relay teams and two of the top-10 teams in the NCAA this year. The Hoosiers won the title at 9:34.20. Minnesota's second-place showing netted eight points in the team standings.
The Gophers also picked up six points from Glen Harold's third-place finish in the pole vault. Harold cleared 5.29 meters (17-04.25 ft.).
The Maroon & Gold also pushed several competitors through preliminary races on Friday with Nate Roese leading the charge in the 600 meters. The senior led all competitors in the event with a personal record of 1:16.25 - a mark that also pushed Roese to third on Minnesota's all-time performers list behind Harun Abda and Tom Gerding.
Earlier in the day, Hechsel hit an indoor personal record of 1:48.71 to advance to the 800 meter finals while Jon Tollefson also moved on in the 60-meter hurdles with a personal record of 8.01.
Two additional members of the distance medley relay also advanced into the mile finals with Wiebke leading his heat at 4:07.55 and Streich coming in third in his heat at 4:04.68.
Wellenstein added a personal record in the 400 meters at 46.95 and Brad Neumann ran an indoor personal record of 6.76 in the 60 meters although neither moved on to the finals.
The Gophers close out the 2017 Big Ten Indoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
