Black History Month: Chioma "Chi Chi" Omeoga

In honor of Black History Month, Gopher Athletics is celebrating those who made us great. Throughout February, GopherSports.com will share short interviews with African-American alumni from almost every Gopher program. In these interviews, former student-athletes reflect on their time at the U of M, provide advice to current Gophers and share what Black History Month means to them personally.

What is it you miss most about the University?
I miss how structured and (in hindsight) care-free life was. I miss the community I had with my teammates.
If you could give the current student-athletes any piece of advice, what would it be?
Explore. Do activities and form relationships with others outside of athletics. There is an entire world of experiences on campus that you could easily miss if you are not looking.
Please share your favorite university or athletic event you've attended since you graduated and what made it so special to you?
There was a track meet in early 2016 where the 2006 team was honored. We were the first Gopher women's team to ever win the Big Ten Track and Field Championship so it was great being back and feeling all the love.
What are you grateful for?
My faith in God, family, friends, good health and the experiences that have shaped me.
What does Black History Month mean to you?
Black History Month is a reminder that we are bigger and greater than what some would like us to believe. Black history and achievement is not limited to a handful of individuals from 60 years ago - it's expansive and it's also recent. It's a time to celebrate that.
What occupies your time now?
Work and various activities at church.
