COLLEGE STATION, Texas - All four Golden Gophers earned Second Team All-American honors as Emma Spagnola, Kimberly Golding, Kiley Sabin, and Emerald Egwim represented the University of Minnesota women's track & field team at the 2017 NCAA Indoor Championship at Texas A&M's Gilliam Indoor Track Friday night.
"The women competed well, and I'm proud of them for getting here," director of women's track & field and cross country Matt Bingle said. "It's part of the process for the younger ones. I thought Emma ran really well and competed well, running the second-best time of her life. The other three did the best they could for the day and gave all the effort that they had.
"There are a lot of positives for them in just being here and being challenged this way. The biggest thing is for all four of them to evolve and learn from the experience. No matter what their result was, grow from it, learn from it, and use it to motivate them to continue getting better emotionally and physically."
Spagnola led the Gophers with an 11th-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles, clocking a time of 8.16 seconds for her second-best mark of the year. Meanwhile, Kimberly Golding came in 14th overall in 8.25 seconds. The duo ends the 2017 indoor season sharing the Minnesota program record in the 60m hurdles at 8.13 seconds.
Sabin also earned Second Team All-American honors with a 15th-place finish in the shot put in her NCAA Championship debut. She recorded a mark of 15.81m (51-10.50), her third-best mark of the season, after breaking the Gophers' program record at 17.17m (56-04.00) earlier this season.
Egwim rounded out the Gophers' NCAA qualifiers, earning the second All-American award of her career. She picked up Second Team All-American honors with a 16th-place finish in the 400-meter dash in 53.80 seconds; Egwim also earned second team accolades at the 2015 NCAA Outdoor Championship following a 13th-place finish in the 4x400m relay.
The Gophers kick off their 2017 outdoor slate at the Bulls Invitational in Tampa, Fla., on Friday, March 17 and Saturday, March 18.
