Minnesota opened its trip to the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships by earning All-America Honorable Mention in the 800-yard freestyle relay. Danielle Nack broke the Gophers 200 freestyle record on the leadoff leg in Indianapolis.
Nack split a 1:44.39 to start Minnesota's race, breaking Jenny Shaughnessy's record from 2009. Chantal Nack, Tevyn Waddell and Zoe Avestruz combined with her to finish 14th in 7:00.73.
The Gophers returned to the top 16 in the 800 free relay after not qualifying for the event at NCAAs last year. All four Minnesota team members earned their first All-America certificates.
The championship meet will continue Thursday with preliminary heats at 9 a.m. CT. The Gophers will have participants in the 500 freestyle, 50 freestyle, 1-meter diving, 200 freestyle relay and 400 medley relay on Day 2.
