Minneapolis, Minn. - The University of Minnesota fell 11-2 to Hawaii at U.S. Bank Stadium Thursday for their third loss of the season.
The night before the Dairy Queen Classic, the Gophers started Tyler Hanson on the mound. The senior went 4.0 innings where he allowed six hits, three earned runs and struck out three batters.
Following Hanson was Reggie Meyer who tossed 3.1 innings. He also allowed six hits and two runs (one earned) while striking out two batters. Tim Shannon faced three batters where he allowed one hit and picked up one earned run.
The next pitcher out of the bullpen was Jeff Fasching who went 0.2 innings giving up one hit, three unearned runs and striking out one batter. Fred Manke made his first appearance of the year, walking four batters and tacking on two earned runs. The final pitcher for the Gophers was Cody Campbell who walked one of the two batters he faced.
Offensively, Minnesota's first run came in the bottom of the fourth inning when Toby Hanson brought in Matt Stemper with a sacrifice fly to center field with the bases full. Unfortunetly the Gophers stranded the other two runners. This was Hanson's eighth RBI of the season and Stemper's fifth run scored.
The second run came with a Jordan Smith solo home run above the home run line on the right field baggy. That was the third home run for the Gophers this season.
Terrin Vavra got back on track with a 3-4 night where he scored one run. Micah Coffey was the only other Gopher with multiple hits as he was 2-5.
Tomorrow the Gophers start the 30th Dairy Queen Classic at 6:30 p.m. as they host Oral Roberts. You can follow the action this year by following the Gophers on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
