MINNEAPOLIS ââ'¬" Director of women's track & field and cross country Matt Bingle shares his thoughts on the Gophers' season-opening meets as the distance runners head to the Raleigh Relays for their first outdoor meet after the sprinters, hurdlers, jumpers, and throwers opened the outdoor season at the Bulls Invitational last weekend.
On the Bulls Invitational last week...
Bingle: I thought the throws went well. With the hammer and discus, they had a good start to the season after a high-volume week. That was good and was a good start for them. They have a couple weeks now to get back to training and continue to figure things out. The whole week was a good team week. It was a good week of work, being in Tampa and being able to train. They worked well together, got along, put their heads down and came to practice every day to do their jobs, which is what we wanted. The other highlight was probably Taylor Wiebke. She keeps getting more and more confident each competition. Good opening marks for the 400-meter hurdles as well. They all PR'd. We're excited about that group outdoors with Emma Spagnola, Rachel Schow, Lindsey Smits, Erin Huls, and Meleah Biermaier.
On the Raleigh Relays this week...
Bingle: The distance runners are going to Raleigh for their opening weekend. We're excited to see where they're at. We'll have some runners in the 10K. It will be kind of like it was for the sprints group last week where we just see where everyone is at; then you know what you have to do to get better. This is a good meet to go to, and it's a good trip for them to get connected to each other, get their baseline of where they're at to see what's next. We're excited to get everybody through and competed.
On what's next...
Bingle: UCLA next weekend is again just the sprints, hurdles, throws, and jumps group, and then we'll all be together at ASU. That's where we all will really get after it for the first time this season.
