Hammer Throw Opens UCLA Invitational

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Agnes Esser defended her title from a year ago and the Golden Gopher women's track & field team took the top four places in the hammer throw on day one of the UCLA Legends of Track & Field Invitational at UCLA's Drake Stadium Friday.
Esser recorded a winning throw of 60.04m (196-11) to win her second-straight hammer title at the UCLA meet after winning with a mark of 59.55m (195-04) a year ago.
Follow Esser, Temi Ogunrinde finished as runner-up with a career-best throw of 59.67m (195-09). Not only did Ogunrinde earn a second-place showing, but she also moved from 10th to eighth in program history.
Angie Guenther took third with a throw of 59.22m (194-03), and Nina Horvath recorded a career-best throw of 57.31m (188-00) for fourth place.
Action continues Saturday at the UCLA Legends Invitational, beginning with field events at 12 p.m. CT. Track events are scheduled to start with the women's 4x100-meter relay at 4:05 p.m. CT.
