Gophers Fall in East Lansing

East Lansing, Mich. - The University of Minnesota fell 5-2 to Michigan State Saturday at the MSU Tennis Courts. The Gophers are now 10-8 overall and 2-3 in the conference.
The Maroon and Gold are 7-4 in the friendly confines of Baseline Tennis Center but are now 3-4 on the road.
Doubles
The day began when Annemarie Emme and Camila Vargas Gomez fell to Aslina Chua and Lexi Baylis 6-2 in the No. 3 spot. This was only the sixth loss of the year for the Minnesota duo.
The Spartans picked up the doubles point when Emily Metcalf and Davina Nguyen defeated Mehvish Safdar and Caitlyn Merzbacher in the No. 1 spot 6-2.
With Michigan State leading 1-0, Caroline Ryba and Cammy Frei's match versus Samantha Memije and Athena Trouillot was left unfinished with the pair from Minnesota up 4-3.
Singles
Michigan State took a 2-0 lead after Nguyen took down Emme in the No. 4 spot 6-2, 6-3 then Vargas Gomez fell 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 5 spot to Athena Trouillot.
The Spartans clinched the victory when the No. 3 spot saw Emily Metcalf defeat Barbara Mancera 6-3, 7-5.
The first Minnesota point came from Caitlyn Merzbacher who took down Samantha Memije 6-1, 7-5 in the No. 6 spot. The sophomore is now 8-2 overall this season and 4-0 in singles dual matches this season.
Quickly after, Caroline Ryba picked up the second Minnesota point with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over No. 117 Aslina Chua in the No. 1 spot. Ryba is 15-11 overall this season and 9-6 in dual matches, all of them from the No. 1 spot.
The day finished when Erin Faulkner defeated Maja Vujic in the No. 2 spot. The senior fell 7-6 in the first set but bounced back in the second set, winning 6-2. She ended up falling in the third set 1-0.
