Gophers Tally Third Big Ten Win

Minneapolis, Minn. - The University of Minnesota defeated Purdue 6-1 for their third conference victory following a ceremony honoring head coach Chuck Merzbacher who announced his retirement earlier this week.

Five Gophers tallied single play victories, with Camila Vargas Gomez clinching the win for the team.

"I am really proud of this team!" Merzbacher said. "We are giving all we can to make a run here at the end. We really stepped up across the board. It was a total team effort!"

Doubles
Tina Kreinis and Annemarie Emme quickly downed their Caitlin Calkins and Marta Ruedas at the No. 2 spot, 6-2, followed immediately by Caitlyn Merzbacher and Mehvish Safdar, with a 6-2 win over Andjela Djokovic, clinching the doubles point for Minnesota.

Caroline Ryba and Cammy Frei's match went unfinished against Alex Sabe and Natalia Davila, 3-5 because of the clinched point.

Singles
Emme picked up the first singles victory of the match over Deborah Suarez, 6-2, 6-2, at position No. 4, handing the Gophers a 2-0 advantage. Maja Vujic fell at the No. 3 spot 6-2, 6-1 to Baqueriso, resulting in Purdue's first point in the match.

At spot No. 6, Frei secures the Gophers' third point of the match with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Purdue's Calkin. Frei is undefeated in dual singles play with four wins.

Vargas Gomez clinched the win with her victory over Davila, 6-3, 6-3, at spot 5. She now has 11 wins on the season.

Kreinis secured a victory during a match tiebreak, downing Sabe, 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (2), adding to the Gophers' victory. She leads Minnesota with 12 victories on the season, 8 of which come from the No. 2 spot

Ryba finished the overall match by defeating Djokovic in three sets, 6-2, 2-6, 6-0, grabbing her 11th win on the season and bringing the overall score to 6-1.

Minnesota returns to Baseline Tennis Center on April 16 for their last home match against Indiana. The Senior Day match will take place at 11 a.m.and honor senior Maja Vujic.
