England Boys Golf team member Angus Flanagan has signed a National Letter of Intent to play golf for the University of Minnesota. He will be eligible to compete for the Gophers starting in fall of 2017, joining Ben Frazzini, Evan Long and Reece Sanders in next year's freshman class.
"Angus will arrive in Minnesota as one of the highest ranked recruits in program history," head coach John Carlson said. "As a leader of Team England, he will make an immediate impact within the Big Ten Conference and on the national scene. We are excited about all four additions to Gopher Golf in the 2017 class!"
Flanagan is a native of Woking in Surrey, England. In the European Golf Rankings, he checks in 16th among all golfers 18 and under with a scoring average of 71.80 in his six qualifying events. Flanagan won the 2016 Carris Trophy, claiming the English boys' under-18 open stroke play championship. He finished 11 under and went on to win a playoff for the trophy.
Based on that victory and results in other designated tournaments, Flanagan was runner-up on the England Boys' Order of Merit for 2016. Some of his other tournament finishes included sixth place in the Duke of York Young Champions and fifth in the South East Boys' County Qualifier. At the Duke of York Young Champions, he accepted the Lowest Round Medal from the event's namesake after carding a 68. Last week, Flanagan finished third in the Peter McEvoy Trophy, a U18 junior boys' tournament.
"As soon as I arrived at Minnesota I fell in love with it and saw myself fitting into the University very well," Flanagan said. "I have got on really well with the team and coaching staff throughout. The Big Ten Conference has big colleges in it and I am really looking forward to competing in it. I want to compete against the best players every week."
Flanagan brings international tournament experience to Minnesota. He was part of England's winning team at the 2016 Boys' Home Internationals. He also played for England's U16 team in matches against Wales, Scotland and Ireland in 2015. He was selected to the 10-member 2016-17 England boys' squad.
