Ryba Extends Winning Streak as Gophers Fall

College Park, Md. - The University of Minnesota fell 5-2 in their second to last regular season match Friday to Maryland.
The Gophers are now 12-11 overall and 4-6 in the conference following Friday's match.
Doubles
The day started off with a Minnesota victory in the No. 1 doubles spot. Caitlyn Merzbacher teamed up with Mehvish Safdar to defeat Kristina Hovsepyan and Alexandra Stanova 6-3. This was the duo's 11th win overall and their eighth victory in dual matches.
Maryland made it even when Arnelle Sullivan and Cassandre Thebault defeated Caroline Ryba and Cammy Frei 6-3 in the No. 3 spot.
The Terrapins went up 1-0 as they clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 Caroline Williams and Ekaterina Tour victory over Annemarie Emme and Tina Kreinis in the No. 2 spot.
Singles
Singles started with a Maryland victory in the No. 4 spot as Hovsepyan defeated Emme 6-2, 6-2 the Sullivan took down Maja Vujic in the No. 3 spot 6-1, 6-4.
With the Terrapins leading 3-0, Ryba put the Gophers on the board with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Stanova in the No. 1 spot. The win marked the 19th victory of the year for the junior and is her 13th win in dual matches. It also extends her match winning streak to four-straight matches.
The Gophers quickly made it 3-2 as Caitlyn Merzbacher won in three sets in the No. 6 spot over Cassandre Thebault. Merzbacher dropped the first set 4-6 but rebounded with a 6-3 win in the second set. She took the third and final set 6-0. The sophomore is now 10-4 overall this season and 6-2 in dual matches.
Maryland clinched the match victory when Tour defeated Kreinis in three sets in the No. 2 spot. Tour won the first set 6-4 then Kreinis answered with a 6-4 victory in the second set. Tour ended up pulling a 6-3 win in the third set.
The day ended when Kate Yemelyanenka defeated Camila Vargas Gomez 7-5, 7-6 in the No. 5 spot to make it 5-2 in favor of Maryland.
Up Next
The Gophers will have a day off as they head to Piscataway, N.J. as they take on Rutgers for the regular season finale. The match is schedule to begin at 10 a.m. central time.
