Minnesota Finishes Regular Season with a Win

Minneapolis, Minn. - The University captured a 6-1 victory over Rutgers Sunday in their final regular season match of the season.

The Gophers finish the regular season with a 13-11 overall record and a 5-6 record in the Big Ten Conference.

Doubles
The Maroon and Gold started off the day with a 6-1 victory from Tina Kreinis and Annemarie Emme when they defeated Chloe Lee and Ksenija Tihomirova in the No. 2 spot. The pair is now 4-2 in dual matches.

The No. 3 spot saw Caroline Ryba and Cammy Frei fall 6-2 to Jacqueline Cochrane and Farris Cunningham. The Gophers clinched the doubles point when Caitlyn Merzbacher and Mehvish Safdar defeated Mingxiu Du and Katherine Muzik 6-4 in the No. 1 spot.

The duo of Merzbacher and Safdar will finish the regular season with 12 overall wins and nine dual match victories.

Singles
Ryba made it 2-0 for the Gophers when she defeated Du 6-1, 6-3 in the No. 1 spot. The junior is 20-12 overall, 14-7 in dual matches and riding a five-match win streak.

Next to finish was Maja Vujic in the No. 3 spot. The senior defeated Lee 6-2, 6-2 for her 10th dual match victory of the spring.

It was 3-1 after Cammy Frei fell 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 6 spot to Cunningham but the Gophers clinched the win when Kreinis defeated Tihomirova in the No. 2 spot. Kreinis won the first set 6-3 then fell 0-6 in the second set. She rebounded with a 6-4 third set to clinch the victory. The freshman is 21-14 overall and 14-8 in dual matches.

Annemarie Emme extended the Gophers lead when she defeated Muzik 5-7, 7-5, 10-8 in the No. 4 spot. Emme has 10 overall wins and six dual match victories.

Camila Vargas Gomez finished off the Minnesota victory with a 6-5, 0-6, 6-3 win over Cochrane in the No. 5 spot. Vargas Gomez will finish the regular season with a 21-12 overall record and a 13-8 dual match record.

Up Next
The Gophers are the No. 8 seed in the Big Ten Tournament. They will take on Nebraska in Champaign, Ill April 27 with the match scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. central time.
