Gophers Compete In Big Ten Double Dual

LAINSBURG, Mich. - The University of Minnesota Rowing team competed against No. 3 Michigan, No. 11 Wisconsin, and No. 16 Michigan State in the Big Ten Double Dual on Saturday afternoon on Lake Ovid. The Gophers competed in 12 races total with split morning and afternoon sessions. The Varsity 2V8 boat captured the only first place finish of the day.

Morning Session
The Novice 8 kick started the day for the Gophers against Michigan but finished behind the Wolverines in second place (7:16.84). Shortly after the Varsity 4 races began and first with the Varsity 3V4 boat for the Gophers which finished in third place (7:49.37) behind the Badgers and Wolverines. In the Varsity 2V4 race the Gophers yet again fell behind Wisconsin and Michigan for third place (7:48.83). For the Varsity 1V4 boat's battle with Michigan the Gophers finished second to the Wolverines (7:30.12).

The Varsity 2V8's race with Michigan saw the Wolverines capture first and the Gophers claim second (6:56.78). The final race of the morning for the Gophers saw the Varsity 1V8 boat fall to second place (6:44.43) behind Michigan before the midday break.

Afternoon Session
Similar to the morning session, the Novice 8 boat got things started for the Gophers but fell to the Spartans in the first race back in the water (7:18.44). The Varsity 3V4 boat finished in third (8:05.78) behind to Michigan and Wisconsin. As for the Varsity 2V4 a similar result of third place was recorded (7:48.25). The final Varsity 4 race of the day, the Varsity 1V4 boat finished just behind the Spartans in second place (7:36.99).

The second race for the Varsity 8 2V8 boat of the event gave the Gophers a first place finish (6:43.51) over the Spartans for Minnesota's first win of the day. In the final event the Varsity 1V8 boat recorded a second place slot (6:47.63) just behind Michigan State.
