UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Madeline Strandemo won the 3,000-meter steeplechase and the Golden Gopher women's track & field team also picked up team points in discus and high jump on day two of the Big Ten Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championship at Nittany Lion Outdoor Track on Saturday afternoon.
Strandemo ran a Minnesota program record time of 9:51.83 to cruise to nearly a seven-second victory over runner-up Claire Borchers of Michigan (9:58.45). After finishing as B1G steeplechase runner-up a year ago, Strandemo is the Gophers' second B1G champion of the meet joining hammer throw champion Temi Ogunrinde, who won her event on Friday.
"It was great to see Maddie win the Big Ten title and break the school record with a good, national-level time," director of women's track & field and cross country Matt Bingle said. "That's a tribute to her and what she's been able to do. I'm very happy for her."
Minnesota wrapped up day two of competition in first place with 45.5 points for a 0.5-point advantage over second-place Michigan (45 points). Host Penn State (40), Purdue (33), and Indiana (31) round out the top five teams through eight scored events.
"We had some setbacks here and there, but the women overcame those and pushed forward," Bingle said. "The team stuck together, and we just kept firing away and didn't back off. I was proud of that and I feel good about where we are heading into the final day. We still have some work to do, and they know that, but we feel like we can come into tomorrow and close out the meet well."
The Gophers secured seven points in the discus with three top-nine finishes. Agnes Esser led the way with a third-place showing with a throw of 52.05m (170-09), and Kiley Sabin grabbed one point in the team race with an eighth-place throw of 51.07m (167-06). Angie Guenther came in ninth at 50.07m (164-03) as well.
Both Gopher high jumpers scored points for the team race as Heta Tuuri cleared 1.78m (5-10.00) to place sixth and Taylor Wiebke tied for seventh at 1.70m (5-07.00).
In Saturday's other event finals, Shanique Wright finished 21st in the long jump with a mark of 5.55m (18-02.50), and Paige Peschel took 25th in the 800-meter run in 2:14.00. Kayla Nelson competed in the heptathlon long jump (4.93m, 16-02.25) and javelin (23.43m, 76-10) but pulled out of the 800m and did not finish.
Saturday's preliminary heats saw three Gophers punch their tickets to Sunday's event finals as Kimberly Golding, Emma Spagnola, and Emerald Egwim will all move on.
Golding broke her own Minnesota program record with the second-fastest preliminary time in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing in a career-best 13.03 seconds. Spagnola ran a season-best 13.21 for the third-best prelim time, just one one-hundredth of a second off her PR of 13.20.
"I thought Emma and Kim ran well," Bingle said. "It was wind-legal, and that makes it really special and exceptional for them."
Egwim clocked the top time in the 400-meter dash at 51.99 seconds, breaking her own Minnesota program record. Bolade Jinadu also posted a career-best mark, finishing 18th in 55.51 seconds. Kat Keller (56.94) and Sophia Anderson (57.09) also competed.
"It was great to see Emerald run 51-point," Bingle said. "That's pretty special. She did it by herself and broke the school record again, so that was great for her."
The B1G Championship concludes on Sunday, and the Gophers are set to compete in the shot put, triple jump, 100m hurdles, 400m hurdles, 400m, 1,500m run, 5,000m, 4x100m relay, and 4x400m relay.
The Big Ten Network will have delayed coverage of the championships at 6 p.m. CT Sunday night along with live streaming coverage of the event on BTN2Go throughout the day. Sunday's live stream will be split into two parts, scheduled for 10:30 a.m. CT and 12:45 p.m. CT.
