MINNEAPOLIS (GopherSports.com) - A pair of signed Gophers prospects were honored among the nation's top high school track & field competitors on Thursday as Dawson LaRance was named the 2016-17 Gatorade Montana Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year and Hunter Lucas was named the 2016-17 Gatorade North Dakota Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year.
A native of Fargo, N.D., Lucas closed out his prep career at Fargo Davies High School with three North Dakota Class A state titles as a senior, repeating as champion in the 1,600 meters and the 3,200 meters while also adding a title in the 800 meters. He was the top scorer at the meet with 30.5 points and was named the North Dakota Class A Outstanding Student-Athlete. Lucas, who also picked up the Class A state cross country title as a senior and was named the 2016-17 Gatorade North Dakota Boys Cross Country Athlete of the Year, rounded out his high school career with six overall state titles.
A native of Billings, Mont., LaRance earned a trio of Montana Class AA state titles in his final prep season at Billings Senior High School. He broke a 31-year old state record to repeat as the state 800 meter champion while adding titles in the 1,600 meters and the 4x400 meter relay. LaRance later clocked a 1:49.63 at the Portland Track Festival - registering the fourth fastest 800 meters by a U.S. high school athlete this year.
