The University of Minnesota Gophers were well represented at the USA Gymnastics 2017 National Qualifier with Shane Wiskus, Jalon Stephens and Shaun Herzog all competing. Wiskus and Stephens each performed strong enough to qualify for the 2017 P&G Championships based on the results of the National Qualification Points System.
"It was an exciting day for Gopher gymnastics as two of three competitors at the National Qualifier advanced to the P&G Championships to be held in Anaheim later this summer," head coach Mike Burns said. "Incoming freshman Shane Wiskus and rising senior Jalon Stephens put together very nice performances."
Wiskus was the only gymnast to tally six event scores in the top-ten at the event. He finished second overall with an 82.200. He put together a 14.100 on vault and a 13.950 in both still rings and on his floor exercise. The Spring Park, Minn. native was already qualified as a junior gymnast but his performance this weekend allows to him to compete in the senior division at the P&G Championships.
Stephens tallied his top performances on vault where he scored a 13.750 and parallel bars where he notched a 13.700. He finished with a 66.4 all-around score and qualified for the P&G Championships for the first time since he was a junior in high school. Herzog also had a strong score on vault with a 13.700.
Wiskus and Stephens will complete at the P&G Championships on August 17-20 in Anaheim, Calif.
"I'm very proud of both of these guys for the effort they put forth and how they represented the University of Minnesota and our gymnastics program," Burns said.
