Our Gopher student-athletes and staff have been busy during the months of June and July as the Summer Athletics Immersive Learning (S.A.I.L.) program visited TCF Bank Stadium.

S.A.I.L. (Summer Athletics Immersive Learning) through the partnership with the Minnesota Historical Society and the University of Minnesota College of Liberal Arts and Gopher Athletics, is a weeklong summer camp program that provides local youth the opportunity to learn more about campus life and the history of athletics, while also enticing the youth to consciously believe that college is possible and attainable.

The goal is to engage youth in research components while placing an emphasis on the history of athletics that will assist in preparation for their end of camp group presentations. This one week program allows youth to experience academics, athletics, campus and dormitory structure under one roof – in hopes of being their BEST summer experience yet.

The program consists of a variety of daily physical activities that includes football, kickball, basketball, soccer, and track and metrics for two hours during the day. The students also hear a variety of immersion speakers daily before lunch.

Following an hour-long lunch break in the dorm cafeteria, each student spends four hours daily at the library taking notes, selecting, researching and writing articles. They use this time to create a draft and look to finalize a research paper that is presented to family, friends and students on the last day of camp.

After the presentation, each student receives a backpack full of school items, (notebook, pens and pencils, paper, calculator, folders) and a $100.00 check from the Minnesota Historical Society.
