Abby DeMuse will be one of four seniors on the Gophers squad this season. This summer she had the opportunity to get an internship in her career path, get in some relaxing and prepared for the upcoming season. We caught up with her in the latest summer update.
Gopher Sports: First off, how was your summer? Can you believe it is already wrapping up?
Abby DeMuse: My summer was good! Definitely busy, but that's how I like it. It went by so fast, I can't believe it's almost over!
GS: You had an internship with Macy's? Can you talk about how you got that, what you did for it and how the experience was?
AD: I did have an internship with Macy's. I was working down in Rochester at their Apache mall store about three times per week. I was an intern with management, so I was essentially working with all the different managers and learning what they do on a daily basis. I got the opportunity while I was there to walk along with the managers on a district visit. Since I am a retail merchandising major, it was an amazing experience to learn the daily functions in a retail setting.
GS: Outside of the internship, what did you do this summer? Any final plans before the school year starts?
AD: Outside of my internship, I spent a lot of time just hanging out with my dogs and my boyfriend and tried to relax as much as I could when I wasn't working. My boyfriend and I also drove to Milwaukee for a weekend to visit his family; that was a much needed mini getaway. Before school starts I am taking a trip out to Oregon with my parents to visit some family and to do some exploring and hiking in one of my absolute favorite states. I'm also definitely going to spend a day at the state fair before starting school again!
GS: You are heading into your senior season. What is your favorite part about being a Gopher gymnast? What are you looking to build on in your final season?
AD: Being a Gopher gymnast is absolutely amazing in so many ways- there are so many great opportunities through events like ProDay and HopeDay, but I think all of the amazing relationships I've built because of this sport are my absolute favorite part. I've met so many fans and supporters of our program who just love watching us compete, and that really inspires me to keep trying to be the best I can be in every aspect of my life. This year I just really want to go out with a bang. I've had kind of a tough college career with various injuries, so I just really want to give it all I've got this year and appreciate every day I have left of this amazing sport.
GS: What is one piece of advice you would give you the incoming freshmen?
AD: My advice to the freshmen is don't take anything for granted. These four years go by so fast so appreciate every moment and never give up even when things get difficult. We do a tough sport, so embrace that and show everyone how tough you can be. Also- competing for this team is honestly the best feeling in the world- never forget that your teammates have your back 100%.
