MINNEAPOLIS (GopherSports.com) -- The IAAF World Championships kick off this weekend in London with Gophers great Hassan Mead set to compete in the men's 10,000 meters on Friday at London Stadium.

The men's 10,000 meters is scheduled for 3:20 p.m. CT on Friday, Aug. 4.

A native of Minneapolis, Minn., Mead captured the U.S. title in the men's 10,000 meters last June to snap Galen Rupp's streak of eight-straight USATF 10,000 meter championships. Mead clocked a winning time of 29:01.44 at the USATF event.

An eight-time All-American and a nine-time Big Ten champion for the Gophers, Mead previously competed at the IAAF World Championships in 2015 while he also represented the United States at the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio. In both events, Mead competed in the 5,000 meters.

Fans can catch the men's 10,000 meters live via stream on the newly launched Olympic Channel as well as NBC Sports Gold. Highlights from Friday will also air on NBCSN starting at 6 p.m. CT.
