The University of Minnesota women's gymnastics program released their 2018 competition schedule, head coach Jenny Hansen announced Friday. The Gophers are slated to host four home meets, along with the annual intrasquad matchup.
"We have a fantastic schedule for the 2018 season," Hansen said. "We are fortunate to compete all throughout the country on the road as well as bring senior Hannah Hitchcock back to Northern California."
The Gophers bring back a talented squad for the 2018 season with 14 returning student-athletes. They also add three exciting freshmen.
The Maroon and Gold open up with two home meets in January. They start with a meet against Maryland and Northern Illinois on Jan. 13, and take on Michigan State the following week. The Gophers then hit the road for back-to-back tough Big Ten matchups at Ohio State and Nebraska.
The Gophers return home on Feb. 9 to take on Illinois, last years' Big Ten Championship runner-ups. In the middle of February, Minnesota will head to the GymQuarters Invitational and wrap-up with a meet at Iowa State where they will also compete against Illinois again.
Arizona State rolls into Dinkytown for the Gophers final regular season home meet on March 3. That evening will also be senior night. Hitchcock will return to her home state with the Gophers on March 9 for a meet with Sacramento State, Alaska and California.
On March 17, Minnesota will head to Rutgers for the Big 5 meet. The following week they will compete at Illinois for the Big Ten Championships.
On April 7, Minnesota will be a host site for the NCAA Regionals. The Gophers come into this year having qualified for the NCAA Regionals in 22 straight seasons.
"Although we are only hosting four regular season home competitions, we are thrilled to be hosting the 2018 NCAA Regional Championships," Hansen said. "It's always an incredible opportunity for our fans and our student-athletes when we get to host a championship at Minnesota."
