Gophers Place 12th at Home Tournament

Minnesota opened its men's golf season with a 12th-place finish at the 13th annual Gopher Invitational. On Monday morning the Golden Gophers finished off the best second round of the field before starting the last 18 holes. Riley Johnson led Minnesota at Windsong Farm Golf Club with a tie for 22nd.
Arkansas won the Gophers' home tournament with a 4-under-par team score of 848, tied for the lowest in tournament history and 10 strokes lower than second-place Baylor. Kent State's Ian Holt posted the second-lowest medalist score in tournament history with a 10-under 203 to win. He was three shots ahead of Arkansas' Mason Overstreet.
Minnesota was 27 over at 879. The Gophers' 4-under 280 in Round 2 was the best in the field for that round. They concluded with a 295 in the third.
Johnson finished up a 3-under 68 for the second round and carded a 72 in the third. His second round included six birdies, and his third four. Johnson was 5 over for the tournament.
Rúnar Arnorsson and Angus Flanagan tied for 31st with 7-over scores of 220. Arnorsson notched a 73 and 71 in his last two rounds. Flanagan had all three of his scores count in his collegiate debut, with a 72 and 74 in the last 36 holes.
Thomas Longbella (+10) tied for 51st. His 67 in the second round was the Gophers' best score of the tournament, with five birdies and one bogey. Peter Jones (+17) tied for 71st.
Seven Gophers played as individuals. Charlie Duensing and Ben Frazzini tied for 31st. Gus Minkin tied for 64th, and his second-round 71 was the best round by a Gopher individual for the tournament. Alex Uloth and Evan Long tied for 81st, while Reece Sanders was 85th and Campbell Fisher was 87th. Frazzini, Minkin, Long and Sanders were making their collegiate debuts.
At Pioneer Creek, Baylor's Garrett May won the Gopher Individual. He shot a course-record 63 (-9) in the final round and won by 11 strokes at 15 under. Kent State's Chris Doody was second.
