MINNEAPOLIS - Four different Gophers scored goals, including three rookies, as the University of Minnesota women's hockey team earned a 4-0 shutout win over Korea's women's national team in an exhibition game at Ridder Arena Sunday afternoon.
Freshmen Grace Zumwinkle, Emily Brown, and Taylor Wente along with sophomore Alex Woken scored goals for the Gophers while Sidney Peters and Alex Gulstene split time in net. Zumwinkle led all players with two points, adding an assist to her game-winning goal.
"It was a really fun game tonight; obviously to be able to play an Olympic team, in particular a team like Korea, was really good for us," head coach Brad Frost said. "Get our jerseys on, get our freshmen involved, and just start playing against somebody else. We've been practicing against each other for five days now. We're excited with the thought of what our team is going to be this year and looking forward to a good week of practice. But overall, what a great experience here playing Team Korea."
The Gophers outshot Korea, 49-7, with Peters making five stops in 32:11 while Gulstene made two saves on the lone two shots she faced.
Minnesota took a 2-0 lead after the first period on goals by Zumwinkle and Brown. Zumwinkle scored on a wrist shot off a feed from Sophie Skarzynski just 90 seconds into the game before Brown scored on the Gophers' first power play of the game to double the lead at the 13:38 mark of the opening period.
The teams played a scoreless second period despite the Maroon & Gold outshooting Korea 14-0 for the middle frame. Went and Woken then extended Minnesota's lead in the third. Wente scored to make it 3-0 at the 3:24 mark of the period, and Woken netted a shorthanded goal with 6:32 remaining.
"The freshmen scored three out of four of the goals here today, so I'm really excited to see what we can do this season," Zumwinkle said of her first experience representing the Maroon & Gold.
Minnesota was 1-for-2 on the power play while adding Woken's shorthanded goal and keeping Korea off the board on one opportunity with the man advantage.
Sunday saw the Gophers host a celebration for Kathleen Ridder Day in honor of Ridder's incredible legacy and her contributions and commitment to women's athletics at the University of Minnesota. The Gophers held a ceremonial puck drop prior to the game with Kathleen Ridder Crampton, Robert and Kathleen Ridder's daughter.
The Gophers officially open the 2017-18 season by hosting Merrimack next weekend. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. CT Friday and 2 p.m. CT Sunday, Oct. 1 at Ridder Arena.
