COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Golden Gopher women's hockey team could not overcome a four-goal deficit as Minnesota dropped game two of this weekend's WCHA series by a score of 5-1 to Ohio State on the road Saturday afternoon.
Minnesota (17-8-2, 10-6-2-0 WCHA) got on the board with 9:47 remaining when Sydney Baldwin beat OSU netminder Kassidy Sauve, but it was not enough as Ohio State (17-5-4, 10-2-4-3 WCHA) had built a 4-0 lead over the opening two periods and scored again in the final three minutes on the way to the Buckeyes' 5-1 win.

Alex Gulstene started the game for Minnesota, making 13 saves on 17 shots in the first 30 minutes of the game; Sidney Peters then played the rest of the game and recorded eight saves on nine shots faced.
The Buckeyes took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission behind first-period goals from Tatum Skaggs and Liz Schepers. Skaggs scored at the 7:25 mark and Schepers found the back of the net just 30 seconds later. OSU held a 13-8 advantage in shots on goal over the opening 20 minutes.
Ohio State added two more goals in a 26-second span of the second period. Maddy Field scored at the 9:21 mark before Rebecca Freiburger got one past Gulstene at the 9:47 mark.
Baldwin's late tally spoiled Sauve's shutout, but the Buckeyes regained the four-goal lead with Field's second goal of the game when she solved Peters with 2:10 on the clock. Minnesota was outshot 26-24 for the game but had a 7-4 shot advantage in the final period.
All six goals came at even strength as both teams were 0-for-2 on the power play.
The Gophers host Minnesota State in their final home series of the regular season next Friday, Jan. 26 and Saturday, Jan. 27. Friday's game is Girls Youth Hockey Night, and the first 250 girls youth hockey players in attendance will receive a free Gopher bag tag. Minnesota will honor its four seniors, Sydney Baldwin, Sidney Peters, Cara Piazza, and Caitlin Reilly prior to Saturday's game for their Senior Night.
