MINNEAPOLIS -- SportCon 2018, the Sports Analytics Conference presented by MinneAnalytics, takes place this Friday, Feb. 2 in Minneapolis, and the Gopher Baseball program will be represented once again as assistant coaches Patrick Casey and Ty McDevitt return as speakers.
After a networking event beginning the conference, the Baseball Panel featuring Casey, McDevitt, Minnesota Twins Director of Baseball Operations, Daniel Adler, and Baseball Systems Manager, Jeremy Raadt, will speak at the panel moderated by St. Paul Saints Director of Broadcasting, Sean Aronson.
As with their presentation at last year's event, the talk will focus on the application of new-age analytics and metrics such as sabermetrics.
"We are most passionate about the opportunity to continue to get people involved in analytics," said Casey. "Our ultimate goal is to make this data easily digestible for our players and for all levels of amateur baseball. The ability to pass on this knowledge and make connections for people is so important."
Baseball analytics and the work of the Minnesota-based Inside Edge organization trace their history back to coach Dick Siebert. Head coach John Anderson originally met with the founders of the organization in the early 1980s to discuss the implementation of software to track and record statistical data in baseball. To this day, Minnesota continues to stand at the forefront of advanced statistical measurements on a daily basis.
"It's just so important to explore different ways to analyze the sport, and different opportunities to learn from others," said McDevitt.
The free event begins Friday at 8 a.m. with a social at the Optum Campus (Building MN501) in Eden Prairie, Minnesota. The all-day event also features presentations from members of the Minnesota Wild, Minnesota Vikings, Pro Football Focus, Inside Edge, the Mayo Clinic, the Miami Dolphins, sports media members, sports analytics start-ups, and local researchers and professors. The day ends with a networking social. For more information, click here.
